How to Install Ubuntu OS in your system?

Linux comes in a wide variety of flavors and their versions. RedHat, Centos, and Ubuntu are the OS based on LINUX Kernel which used by most of the programmers. Ubuntu preferred It is easy to install and equally easy to use. Also, it’s open-source, scalable, secure, and free to download. Ubuntu desktop version includes everything you need to run your enterprise, organization, educational Institutions or home.

Step 0: Prerequisites

You’ll need the pre-requisites following before starting the installation of Ubuntu:

  • Your laptop or desktop should be connected to a power source.
  • Ensure you have at least 5GB for a minimal installation and 25GB of free storage space is recommended for installation of OS and its libraries.
  • You need to access either DVD or USB drive which contains Ubuntu iso.
  • As precaution is always better than cure. Make sure you have a recent backup of your data.

Step 1: Boot from DVD/Flash Drive

As equal to use Ubuntu installation is even better. Install Ubuntu from a DVD /USB. All you need to do is to follow the steps:

  • Put the Ubuntu DVD which iso of Ubuntu version into your optical drive. OR,
    If you’re using a USB Flash Drive, you can go ahead and plug it into the USB port.

  • Restart your computer. 
    As soon as your computer reboots you’ll be able to see the welcome window of Ubuntu as below image.

Now, from the list that appears on your left, go ahead and select your preferred language. Then you have to choose between either trying the desktop first or installing Ubuntu directly.

  • Depending on your computer’s hardware configuration, you can navigate through using your cursor, keyboard, mouse, touchpad, or a simple installation menu, like the one shown below image.

  • Go for, Install Ubuntu.
  • Or, you could also select the option, Try Ubuntu without installing to give Ubuntu desktop test run.

Step 2: Preparations for Installing Ubuntu

  • If the installer doesn’t guess the default layout correctly, You will be asked to select your keyboard layout.
    use Detect Keyboard Layout button to run a brief configuration. Select Continue.
  • After the above section, you will be asked What apps would you like to install to start with? 
    • The Normal installation is the equivalent to the default bundle of applications, games, utilities. It’s a great launchpad for any Linux installation for beginners.
    • The Minimal installation takes comparatively less storage space than the Normal installation procedure and allows users to only install as per requirement.
  • Beneath the installation-type under the other options section there are two checkboxes;
    Download updates while installing updates
    Install third-party software

    it is recommended
     to enable both Download and Install Third-Party Software.

If you are not connected to ethernet, you will be asked to select a wireless network, if available. It is recommended to stay connected to the internet during the installation so your machine is updated correctly. Or else some package may be installed with a crash.

Step 3: Allocate Drive Space

  • There will be checkboxes to choose from. So make a choice, whether you’d like to install Ubuntu alongside another existed operating system,
    Delete your existing disk and operating system and replace it with Ubuntu,
    or Something else.

  • Go ahead and choose your option and,
  • Click on Install Now

Step 4: Begin Installation

  • A small dialogue will appear and have a configuration of the storage options you’ve chosen to review once again and if you want any changes you can go back.
  • If everything looks good go ahead and click Continue to fix changes and start the installation process.

Step 5: Select Location

  • Since you are connected to the internet, your location will be detected automatically. You can change location if your location is inaccurate and click on Continue to proceed.

Step 6: Log in

  • Once you enter your name installer will suggest a computer name and username. These blanks can easily be changed if you have a preferable computer name and username. The computer name is how your computer appear on the network,
    while your username will be your login and account name.
  • Next, set a strong password. 


  • You can choose an option to enable automatic login and home folder encryption if the machine is stolen or lost. This prevents people from accessing your personal files. But in case,  you enabled home folder encryption and forget your password, you won’t be able to retrieve any personal data stored in your home directory. That’s the downside of this option.

Step 7: Background Installation 

  • while the installation completes in the background installer tells you a little about how fantastic is and how secure services Ubuntu has,

Step 8: Installation Complete!

  • After the configuration and installation, a small dialogue box appears asking you to restart your machine. Click on Restart Now and,
    when prompted, remove either the DVD or flash drive you’ve plugged in.
